Donor Spotlight: Darren LeeDarren Lee and his three boys.

Darren Lee has been with Dignity Health in various roles for over sixteen years, most recently serving as President of St. John’s Regional Medical Center and St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in the Central Coast Service Area.

What areas do you philanthropically support and why?

I support our Area of Greatest Need Fund at St. John’s Healthcare Foundation so that the foundation has as much flexibility to allocate and direct the money where it is needed most. Having witnessed the process myself, I have confidence in those closest to the issues to make good use of my contributions.

What motivated you to start giving?

As I walk throughout the hospital and specifically, patient floors, I see first-hand the needs of our patients and community. I do what I can to serve in my current role, but giving financially allows me to help just a little bit more.

Why do you think it’s important to be engaged through philanthropy as a Dignity Health employee?

Giving is who we are as an organization. It is what attracted us initially and, why we remain long term. Each of us does the best we can to serve in our respective roles. But, being engaged through philanthropy deepens our connection to the work and to our communities. It helps turn our jobs, into our mission.

What’s your fondest memory of working at Dignity Health?

I have so many and it seems there is a new one each week. However, I often reflect on my interactions with patients and their families – most notably those in the Emergency Department when I speak with them in Spanish. Their faces simply light up!

What’s one fun fact others might not know about you?

I was recruited and played soccer at UC Berkeley.
