Planned giving generosity: Remembering Costas Issidorides, Ph.D. and Bonnie Issidorides

The late Costas Issidorides, Ph.D. and Bonnie Issidorides(August 2017) - Talented scientist, artist, and philanthropists … these are only a few qualities of the late Costas Issidorides, Ph.D. and Bonnie Issidorides. The couple, who met in 1966 while Dr. Issidorides was teaching and conducting research at the American University of Beirut, Lebenon, left their mark internationally.

Dr. Issidorides, together with his colleague Professor Mahkluf Haddadin, was awarded Lebanon’s highest Medal of Honor for his outstanding research and development of the internationally acclaimed “Beirut Reaction,” which is a chemical reaction that has helped develop hundreds of anti-bacterial and anti-cancerous drugs. During this time, Bonnie kept busy with charitable work for the American Women’s Club and the University Wives Club. In addition, she worked at the American Embassy during the Israeli and Lebanese wars helping to ensure Americans were able to return home, and assisted in the emergency department. Bonnie also spent her afternoons reading to the blind, and volunteered in the university library for a time to ensure it remained open in the evenings.

After returning to the United States in 1986, Dr. Issidorides came out of retirement and continued to share his talent at UC Davis for nine years while Bonnie focused on her health, and began treatment at Woodland Healthcare for an illness. During these years, she became a frequent visitor as patient and patron of the hospital café – making friendships with many on campus.  Her passion to give back to those who helped her manage her illness led her to becoming a trustee for the Woodland Healthcare Foundation.

Bonnie shared in 2007, “My health was recently improved, and I feel I am now able to participate in charitable work. The hospital immediately came to mind, as I have spent much time there as a patient and I would like to give back to the institution which helped me improve so greatly.”

In 2010, Bonnie lost the love of her life, Costas; and in 2016 Bonnie passed away. Their gratitude to Woodland Healthcare for the care they received and their passion for philanthropy, led to a generous planned gift from the Issidorides totaling $450,000. The Woodland Healthcare Foundation is grateful for the generosity and legacy of this gift from Costas Issidorides, Ph.D. and Bonnie Issidorides. Their planned gift will positively impact the health care needs of the community for years to come.
