Donor spotlight: Generous donor leaves legacy gift

In February 2017, Mercy Foundation was honored to host Mary’s 100th birthday party, which she declared “the best day of her life.”

In early March, Mercy Foundation was the grateful recipient of a $1.8 million legacy gift from the estate of Mary McDonald. Mary lived in Folsom for 99 of her 100 years. She was a graduate of Folsom High School and Heald College, and her career at McClellan Air Force Base spanned 31 years.

While Mary’s generosity extended to many organizations, she was a devoted friend and supporter of the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Foundation for over two decades. Through Mercy Foundation, she contributed to a number of major facility expansions at Dignity Health’s Mercy Hospital of Folsom to meet the health care needs of her growing community. Mary was a member of Mercy Foundation’s McAuley and Legacy Societies and was the 2014 recipient of Mercy Foundation’s Inspiring Philanthropy Award.

Her generous gift will be used to create a $1.6 million endowment to support the Sisters of Mercy ministries in the Folsom community. The remaining $200,000 will benefit Sacramento Loaves & Fishes, which provides hot meals and support services to those experiencing homelessness.

Mercy Foundation staff will miss her and are deeply honored she entrusted them to carry out her philanthropic aspirations.
