A final act of gratitude

Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta Hospital emergency department addition ground breaking ceremony.

Polly Postushenko was feisty, smart, and matter of fact. Her work as an auditor for the city of San Francisco kept her on her toes before she retired to Mt. Shasta. Her husband passed away in the 1970s and she never remarried or had children.

She later shared that she had received great care when she suffered a stroke. The Mercy Auxiliary provided her with transportation to and from her medical and physical therapy appointments. Her first gift of $100 to Dignity Health’s Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta arrived in 2010 in response to a direct mail piece where she also indicated that she would include the hospital in her estate plans. She was proud to be a part of the Mercy family.

Over the next six years, Mercy Foundation North staff would visit her in home and in the hospital when she was a patient. In her final days, she was cared for by Dignity Health Mercy Hospice Mt. Shasta, and a foundation development officer had the honor of saying goodbye to her on her last day on this earth.

Polly left Mercy Foundation North half of her estate, of which $300,000 has been awarded so far. This gift is designated for the emergency department expansion which will allow this rural hospital to handle more urgent cases locally, rather than sending them elsewhere.

Polly’s final act on earth was that of generosity to her community.
