St. Mary Medical Center Long Beach received a planned giving distribution of $1.2 Million from the Estate of Helen Bazzeni, a long-time friend and benefactor of the medical center.

Helen and her late husband, Ray, first became acquainted with St. Mary after moving to Seal Beach in the early 1960s, and they befriended the St. Mary Sisters, including Sr. Alphonsus Tallon, who looked after Helen after Ray passed away. After Sr. Alphonsus passed away, Foundation staff took on the tradition and responsibility of bringing food to Helen’s home weekly and looking in after her. The Foundation hosted a celebration in honor of Helen’s 100th birthday at her home last April, attended by hospital and Foundation staff and friends, where she once again regaled stories about her role as Lawrence Welk’s fan club correspondent, and her dancing days at the Argon Ballroom in Santa Monica with the Lawrence Welk Champagne Orchestra.

Sadly, Helen passed away peacefully at the hospital a few weeks following her milestone birthday. The Senior Wellness Center at St. Mary Medical Center is named after Helen and Ray, and her estate gift will help further the hospital’s mission to provide enhanced geriatric services on the St. Mary campus.
