St. Mary Medical Center Foundation received a gift of $455,000, a pledge payment towards a $1,556,675 partnership with the First 5 LA Welcome Baby funding initiative. The first few months of being a new parent are critical for the wellbeing of the baby and new family dynamics. The Welcome Baby Program includes in-hospital assistance with breastfeeding as well as information about bonding and resources that families need to transition into parenthood.  The program follows a family from the time a positive pregnancy is identified to nine months post-partum. Additional services include a personal parent coach, in-home nurse visit, and referrals to additional psychological and social services.

First 5 LA is part of the larger First 5 California state initiative that came out of Proposition 10, and is administered by multiple independent agencies at the county level.  This grant supports the Welcome Baby program, which is housed in two departments at St. Mary Medical Center: the in-patient Maternal Child Health Department; and Families in Good Health, a department of St. Mary Medical Center that provides quality outreach and education services to underserved communities in Long Beach.

The partnership has now entered its third year, with continued support from First 5 LA expected to reach $1,610,299 for Welcome Baby activities occurring in fiscal year16. Generous support from First 5 LA for multiple maternal child health programs has totaled more than $6.5M over 14 years.
