Grateful Patients: Mabel and James Coad

Glendale Memorial Health Foundation

Mabel and James Coad first met when they both worked for the Brunswick Wholesale Drug Company in Los Angeles during the 1930’s.  The two were married in 1942, right before James was shipped out with the Navy as a pharmacist mate in World War II – where he would witness the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima.  After the war, James spent his entire career with the Southern California Gas Company, and Mabel remained a dutiful and loving wife.  Their relationship with Glendale Memorial Hospital began when Mabel became a patient.  James died in 2014; Mabel having preceded him a decade earlier.  Grateful patients, they generously left an estate gift of $300,000 to Glendale Memorial Health Foundation.  The Coads are proudly recognized as founding members of the Foundation’s planned giving program, the Louise Lewis Legacy Society.
