A Fun-Filled Day from Start to Finish

California Hospital Medical Center Foundation

California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) Foundation hosted its 3rd Annual Heart of the City 5K on Saturday, March 28, 2015, with nearly 2,000 participants and over $150,000 raised.

The hospital’s campus is nestled in a blossoming area of urban downtown Los Angeles that has been undergoing a complete renaissance for over a decade.  Every time you turn around, a new residential building or retail shop has moved into the neighborhood. It’s exciting to witness these changes.  The new developments provided CHMC Foundation with a great canvas for an exhilarating 5K course which included a jog by Staples Center and LA LIVE! This event has doubled in size each year since its inception three years ago.

Since downtown Los Angeles has the reputation for being a “dog friendly” neighborhood, we invited all four-legged pups to join the cause. Dogs were given a Heart of the City 5K bandana at check-in and competed in a doggie costume contest after the race.

The support for this event came primarily from two sources: the business community and our individual supporters who registered, created fundraising pages, and collected peer-to-peer pledges.  Several awards were given out to top fundraisers and race finishers. Our Corporate Cup Challenge was a race-within-a-race, where companies competed against each other. The losing team received a humorous bedpan and the winning team received a large trophy. Hospital staff members were encouraged to participate and trophies were awarded to departments internally for the largest team and most raised funds. The slowest hospital team received a comical jar of molasses.

Most importantly, this event was truly a reflection of community diversity and reminded our neighbors that whether you live, work, or visit downtown Los Angeles, CHMC is your hospital.  From our grateful patients and donors, to the high-rise urban condo dweller, and the business professionals who turned in their suits and ties for a pair of running shoes. Everyone had a fun-filled day and helped raise funds and awareness for a great cause.
